Mountaineering is more than just a sport — it's a test of physical strength, mental resilience, and technical skill. My journey into mountaineering began in Manali, India, at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports (ABVIMAS).

If you've ever looked at a snow-capped peak and felt the urge to climb it, this guide is for you. Here's how to start your mountaineering journey as a beginner.

1. Start with High-Altitude Trekking

Before you jump into a mountaineering course, you should have several high-altitude treks under your belt. This helps you understand how your body reacts to altitude (up to 4,000m - 5,000m) and builds the necessary endurance.

Recommended Treks for Beginners:

  • Kedarkantha (Uttarakhand)
  • Beas Kund (Himachal Pradesh)
  • Hampta Pass (Himachal Pradesh)

2. Enroll in a Basic Mountaineering Course (BMC)

The most structured way to learn is by enrolling in a Basic Mountaineering Course. In India, there are several world-class institutes:

  • ABVIMAS (Manali)
  • NIM (Uttarkashi)
  • HMI (Darjeeling)
  • JIM&WS (Pahalgam)
A BMC usually lasts 26-28 days and covers rock craft, ice craft, snow craft, and mountain medicine.

3. Physical Preparation is Key

Mountaineering is physically demanding. You'll be carrying a 15-20kg rucksack for several hours a day on steep terrain.

Training Routine:

  • Running: 5-10km daily to build cardiovascular endurance.
  • Strength Training: Focus on legs, core, and back.
  • Loaded Walking: Walk with a weighted backpack to get used to the weight.
  • Yoga: Improves flexibility and breath control at high altitudes.

4. Essential Mountaineering Gear

While institutes provide technical gear (ropes, boots, crampons, axes), you'll need your own basic kit:

  • High-quality trekking shoes
  • Layered clothing (moisture-wicking, fleece, down jacket, hardshell)
  • 50-60L rucksack
  • Good quality sunglasses (Cat 4 protection)
  • Headlamp with extra batteries

5. Mental Resilience

The mountains will test your patience. You'll face cold temperatures, difficult terrain, and physical exhaustion. Staying calm and focused is just as important as being physically strong.

In 2023, I completed my Basic Mountaineering Course at ABVIMAS. The course was intense — waking up at 5:00 AM for physical training, followed by long days of rock and ice craft. But standing on a glacier with an ice axe in hand, looking at the surrounding peaks, was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.
